Back to My Favorite Summer Memories...

We weren't going to go to New Mexico this summer. I felt weary from the travel that we'd already done (especially since we'd driven), I didn't want to go to New Mexico without seeing everyone (which required staying in 4 cities, 2 of which are in opposite corners of the state), and I knew that Jay wasn't going to be able to come along for all of that time. So we'd made the decision to put it off until next year, which we've done for as many summers as I can remember.

And then my Granddaddy had a seemingly small episode after mowing his lawn (he's 88 -- what's he doing mowing his own lawn???) which put him in the hospital (that was almost 2 months ago, BTW, and he still isn't out). As it became progressively more serious (then less serious, then more serious, then less serious), I started thinking about the last time I'd seen him, and knew that I needed to see him again. So I rounded up Christina and the kids, and went to New Mexico. Jay took a Friday off and drove out with us, and our first stop was Santa Fe.

I love Santa Fe. I never loved Santa Fe when I was growing up there, it felt dusty and unsophisticated and I couldn't wait to get out. But now that I'm older, I can appreciate it. Here's a picture of the kids on the bench outside of our casita on the afternoon of our arrival.
