Immigration Feast

Another second grade activity for Lauren -- immigration dolls.  Each child was given a clothespin or a paper doll cutout, and was told to create a doll modeled after people of their culture.  They were also told to prepare a report about the country of origin.

Lauren, being Lauren, wanted to do everything 110%.  She chose the clothespin (much more involved), and insisted on typing her report rather than write it on the form that was provided.  I love these tendencies.  She always goes above and beyond and that will serve her well in the future.  And her doll did turn out beautifully and her report was fantastic.  However, I had a heavy hand in all of it, and I never like that level of involvement -- I think it's so important that she do it herself.  But this clothespin was small, and getting fabric to look like the dress of a Spanish senorita just wasn't going to happen by herself.

So here are all the dolls, displayed in the classroom temporarily at the Immigration Feast, where each child brought a dish from their culture (it was awesome -- traditional dishes from all over the world, I was quite impressed).  And apparently I wasn't the only parent who had to get more involved, the funny line of the day between the Moms was "which doll did you create?"  Nice idea, Parish.  But maybe the material requirements need to change.....

go ahead -- click on that and take a closer look at those crazy detailed dolls
